Vazhakkai Roast Recipe | Raw Banana Roast

Initially,  when I started blogging I use Vazhakkai only in Aviyal. Later, I started exploring more and tried Vazhakkai Podimas, Vazhakkai Stir-fry, Kootu Curry, Kalan etc. Any side dish for rice using Vazhakkai (raw banana) can be made in a jiffy and it is suitable for our hurry burry busy morning cooking. Today I am sharing an interesting varuval recipe and it goes very well with sambhar, kara kuzhambu and mor kuzhambu. Off to the recipe:
Ingredients:
Vazhakkai/ Raw Banana - 1 
Ginger Garlic Paste - 1/2 tsp(optional)
Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp 
Asafoetida - a generous pinch
Rice flour - 1 tsp(optional)
Salt - as required
Oil - 1 or 2 tblsp
Method:
1. Peel the skin of the raw banana and slice it into medium thick discs. Make sure not to slice it too thin.
2. Now, add all the ingredients except oil to the sliced pieces. Add a tsp of water and coat the pieces with the masala.
3. In a wide pan, add the oil and place the slices as shown below. Roast it in medium flame for a minute and then flip to roast the other side as well. Roast the slices in batches and don't overcrowd it.
Serve the vazhakkai roast with steamed rice and any curry of your choice.
Points to remember:
  • For easy digestion, I add ginger garlic paste and asafoetida. You can skip it if you don't prefer.
  • You can replace chilli powder with sambhar powder for a little different flavour.
  • The colour of the raw banana might change after peeling the skin. You can keep it immersed in water until we marinate it with the masala.
