Fish Egg Thoran Recipe | Meen Mutta Thoran | Fish Roe Stir Fry

When I was in Chennai, I usually order fish through Supreme Seafood and once they were asking me to try Fish Eggs. I have never tasted it before or cooked it. However, I have heard it through my cousins. Dad also told it is very tasty and rich in nutrients. Hence, I ordered a small amount and tried it over a weekend. (almost 2 years ago 😁). I was searching recipes online and this thoran caught my attention. It is very similar to our vegetable thoran and the fish egg should be fried before making the thoran. The fish eggs don't seem to be appealing, but it tasted awesome and I am planning to make it in the future too. Before moving to the recipe, check out my other Seafood collections too.
Ingredients:
Fish Eggs -  250 grams
Oil - 1 tbsp(to shallow fry the fish eggs)
To Marinate:
Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
Pepper Powder - 1/2 tsp
Salt - as required
To Grind:
Coconut - 1/4 Cup
Green Chilli - 2
Garlic - 4 Cloves
Jeera - 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
To Temper:
Coconut Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Curry Leaves -  few
Method:
1. Clean the fish eggs and marinate it with the items under 'To Marinate'. Leave it aside for 15 mins and then shallow fry it in a pan by adding oil.
2. It splutters a lot, so close it with a lid while shallow frying. Turn and fry all the sides. Drain the excess oil by placing it in a tissue paper.
3. Allow the fried fish eggs to cool and chop it finely. Now, grind the items under 'To Grind' coarsely by adding a little water.
4. In a pan, add some oil and allow the items under 'To Temper' to crackle. Then add the ground coconut paste. Cook the coconut paste in medium flame. When the raw smell of the masala paste leaves, add the chopped fried fish eggs. Mix it all together and cook it for a minute or two. switch off the flame.
Serve the yummy thoran along with steamed rice, Sambhar or Paruppu Curry.
Points to remember:
  • The fish eggs will turn rubbery and hard if it is over fried. So fry until it is cooked and soft.
  • Adjust the spiciness as per your taste buds. Coconut oil enhances the taste of the thoran.
  • While marinating the fish eggs, you can add a tsp of ginger garlic paste.
Warm Regards,
