In my native, different variety of Jackfruits is available and I love jackfruit in any form. I have already posted Chakka Pradhaman(Payasam) and Chakka Varatti(Jam) using ripened jackfruit. Apart from these sweet items, mom makes aviyal with jackfruit seeds and thoran with tender jackfruit. After coming to Sydney, I saw tender jackfruit in the Indian shop and immediately grabbed it to try this thoran. I thought of posting it before Onam as one of the special items in Onam Sadya menu. But, I couldn't post it on time. It is better late than never and I am here with the recipe of the yummy and delicious thoran:
Ingredients:Tender Jackfruit - 1(small size)
Chilli Powder - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
Salt - as required
Pepper powder - 1/4 tsp(optional)
To Grind:
Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
Green Chilli - 2
Cumin seeds(Jeera) - 1/2 tsp
Shallots - 3 to 4
Ginger - 1 inch piece
Garlic - 3 cloves
To Temper:
Coconut Oil - 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Dry red chilli - 2
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Method:
1. Cut the jackfruit into 4 equal pieces as shown below. Then remove the outer hard skin and the hard centre stem. Cube it into medium sized pieces.(I got around 2 cups approximately)
2. In a pan, cook the cubed jackfruit pieces with a little water by adding salt, turmeric powder and chilli powder. Take care not to overcook the pieces. Drain the pieces from water and allow it to cool completely. Then shred the cooked jackfruit pieces using mortar and pestle or pulse it in a mixer.
3. Meanwhile, coarsely grind the items under 'To Grind'. In a pan add the coconut oil, crackle the mustard seeds, curry leaves and dry red chilli.

Serve the delicious thoran with any curry of your choice. It goes well with sambhar or parippu curry.

- You can also pressure cook the jackfruit for 2 whistles or steam cook it in idli cooker(steamer)
- If you are shredding the jackfruit in mixer or food processor, then pulse it once. Take care not to mash it.
- While cleaning the jackfruit to prevent the stickiness of the latex/gum, rub your hands and knife sufficiently with oil.
