Moong Dal Tadka Recipe| Simple Dal Tadka | Dal Tadka with Moong Dal

Dal(paruppu) with steamed rice and a dash of ghee is a match made in heaven. It goes very well with potato fry, arbi fry, fish fry and chicken 65. Do check out my already posted Nagercoil based Paruppu curry and Kerala special Parippu curry. When I am very lazy and prefer to eat something good then this quick dal tadka came to my rescue. Sometimes, I prefer basmathi rice rather than normal rice when I make dal tadka. Let us move on to the simple recipe:
Ingredients:
To Pressure Cook:
Moong dal/Paasi paruppu - 1/2 Cup
Tomato(small) - 1
Green chilli - 1
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
Ginger - 1 tsp(finely chopped)
Garlic - 2 cloves(optional)
Salt - As required
To Temper:
Ghee - 2 tsp
Cumin seeds(Jeera) - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Dry Red chilli - 2
Garlic - 2 cloves(crushed)
Asafoetida - a pinch
Curry leaves - few
Method:
1. Wash the yellow split moong dal. In a pressure cooker, add the moong dal and the other ingredients mentioned under 'To Pressure Cook'.  Pressure cook it with enough water for 3 to 4 whistles or until the dal is soft.
2. When the pressure releases, open the cooker and mash the dal once. In a tadka pan, temper it with the items under 'To temper' and pour it over the mashed dal. Adjust the salt.
Serve the yummy moong dal with steamed rice and any spicy fry of your choice. I served it with arbi fry.
Points to remember:
  • If you think the recipe has too much garlic, then skip the garlic while pressure cooking. Just roast it until brown while tempering.
  • Adding ginger is also optional, however I prefer to use it along with moong dal.
  • If required, garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
Warm Regards,
