Happy Navaratri to the people who celebrate this special occasion. I was planning to post few sundal recipes for Navaratri. However, I was completely busy over the last weekend and hence I couldn't click any new recipe. Today I somehow managed to try this simple and easy to make Chana dal sundal. It was very flavourful and here I am with the recipe. Apart from Navaratri, this healthy sundal can be served as after school snacks for kids. Check out my other Navaratri Special Recipes too:
Ingredients:Chana Dal(Kadalai Paruppu) - 1 Cup
Ginger - 1 tsp(chopped finely)
Green Chilli - 2(chopped finely)
Salt - as required
Lemon juice- 1 tsp
Coconut - 1 or 2 tbsp
To Temper:
Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Urad dal - 1 tsp
Asafoetida(hing) - a generous pinch
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Method:
1. Wash the chana dal and soak it in water for 2 to 3 hours. Bring 2 cups of water to boil and cook the soaked chana dal 10 to 12 mins or cook until the dal is soft.(It should not be mushy). Once the dal is half cooked, add the required salt.
2. Drain the leftover water from the dal after cooking. Keep it aside. Meanwhile, temper the items under 'To temper' in a pan. Then along with this add the chopped green chilli and ginger.
3. Now, add the cooked and drained chana dal. Give everything a quick stir and add the grated coconut. Stir it for 2 to 3 minutes.(If required adjust the salt) Finally, squeeze the lemon juice and switch off the flame.

- If required you can pressure cook the dal for 1 or 2 whistles after soaking. But make sure it is not mushy.
- I like the lemon flavour hence I have added it. If you don't prefer, please skip it.
- You can replace green chilli with dry red chilli too.
- Always make sure to add ginger/asafoetida for lentil based sundal to avoid gastric problems.
