I am very much interested in trying different chutneys for Idli/Dosa as the side dish. I have already posted 10+ chutney recipes in the blog and to add on this list, today I am sharing yummy red capsicum chutney. Chutney with veggies is very new to me and I started to learn only after my blog. Once my TCS colleague Rama was talking about this red capsicum chutney and I was not very much interested at that time. However, she prepared it once and gave it to me for tasting. It was so delicious and it goes well with Idli/Dosa, Chapathi and also steamed rice. Recently, I tried it at home and it turns out super delicious. I made it a mildly spicy and Happy too liked it very much. Let us see the preparation steps:
Ingredients:Red Bell pepper(Capsicum) - 1 medium sized
Onion - 1/2
Tomato - 1
Garlic - 3 cloves
Salt - as required
Oil - 1 tbsp(I used sesame Oil)
Channa dal(Kadala Paruppu) - 2 tsp
Red chillies - 2
To Temper:
Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Urad dal - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - few
Method:
1. Wash and chop the bell pepper. Peel the garlic and chop the onion, tomato as well. In a pan, add the oil and roast the channa dal until it is golden brown. Along with this roast the dry red chillies too.
2. Remove it from the pan and allow it to cool completely. Then powder it finely. In the leftover oil, add the chopped onion and saute it until it turns transparent.
3. Now add the chopped tomato, peeled garlic and chopped red capsicum. Add the required salt, saute it until the capsicum and tomato shrinks. Switch off the flame and allow it to cool completely.
2. Remove it from the pan and allow it to cool completely. Then powder it finely. In the leftover oil, add the chopped onion and saute it until it turns transparent.
4. Along with the powdered red chilli and dal, add the roasted onion, capsicum and tomato in the mixer jar. Grind it to a fine paste and if required, add a little water. I have not added any water. In a tadka pan, temper it with the items under 'To Temper' and pour it over the chutney.
Serve the yummy and delicious chutney with hot Idli or Dosa.

- The spiciness is very mild as per the amount of mentioned red chilli. You can add more dry chillies based on your need. You can also saute a green chilli along with the onion.
- For a slight variation, you can add a small piece of ginger and coriander leaves while sauteing onion and tomato.
- You can use any colour capsicum. But I have not tried with any other colour.
