Olan Recipe | Kerala Olan | Onam Sadya Recipe

This week my mission is to try some Onam Sadya recipes. And, this post is an authentic Kerala Olan recipe which I tried two days back. Olan is a dish that is part of Kerala cuisine and any Onam Sadya is incomplete without this curry. It is prepared using ash gourd, cowpeas and coconut milk as the main ingredient. There are many variations of this curry which use yellow pumpkin alone or the combination of ash gourd and pumpkin. It is a very mild curry which goes well with any spicy side dish.

Ingredients:
Ashgourd(white pumpkin) -  1/2 Cup (Cubed)
Yellow pumpkin - 1/2 Cup(cubed)
Red Cowpeas(blackeyed bean) - 1/4 cup
Green Chilli - 3 (Slit lengthwise)
Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
Thin Coconut milk - 1 cup
Thick coconut milk - 1/4 cup
Salt - as required
To temper:
Coconut Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - few
Method:
1. Soak the cowpeas overnight or soak it at least for 5 hours. Then pressure cook it with enough water for 3 to 4 whistles. Drain the water and keep it aside.
2. Prepare the coconut milk by grinding the grated coconut with warm water.
3. Chop the yellow pumpkin and ash gourd as shown below. In a pan, cook the cubed ash gourd, yellow pumpkin in thin coconut milk along with green chilli, cumin seeds and required salt. Cook until it is soft and not mushy. (Cook for just 5 to 7 mins).
4. Add the cooked peas and thick coconut milk. Just heat it up and switch off the flame. In a tadka pan, add some coconut oil. Allow the mustard and curry leaves to crackle. Add it to the curry. (Make sure it is not too hot while adding, to prevent curdling)
The mild and yummy Olan can be served with any spicy thoran or side dish.
Points to remember:
  • You can use the mix of ash gourd and yellow pumpkin or only ash gourd.
  • I have soaked the peas overnight, but I have heard from my friend that without soaking also we can cook the cowpeas. Just cook for 5 to 6 extra whistles in low flame.
  • Olan is a very mild curry, so you can accompany it with any spicy side dish.
  • Cowpeas means Vanpayar in Malayalam and thattaipayir in Tamil.
